Why is SBS required for food packaging?
Recycled-content paperboards may contain trace mineral oils, inks, or other contaminants from their previous use. For direct food contact applications, CFIA regulations require virgin fibre boards like SBS that have no recycled contamination risk. Indirect food contact packaging (outer cartons not touching food) can use recycled-content boards.
Is SBS the same as CRB (Clay Recycled Board)?
No. SBS is virgin fibre with full bleaching. CRB uses recycled content with a white clay-coated surface. SBS is required for direct food contact; CRB is appropriate for indirect food contact and non-food packaging.
What food packaging uses SBS?
